Novidades de Redmond (Anibal Sousa - FLOT) -- Redmond News

Acredito que neste momento você já deve estar a par das mudanças que o grupo Xbox e Xbox LIVE está trazendo para o seu Xbox 360. Mas de qualquer modo, aqui está a lista dos destaques, na minha opinião:

• Avatars (não sei como traduzir isto): se você gostou dos Wii Miis, acho que você vá adorar os Avatars. Este é um conceito velho que o Wii usou bem, mas nós estamos dando um (ou mais) passos a frente;
• Grupos (ainda sem tradução certa): cansado de ter que convidar seus amigos todas as vezes você muda de jogo no 360? Que tal poder partilhar fotos ao vivo, assistir um filme com amigos em outros locais, etc.?
• XBLA: Portal Still Alive : quem não gostou do Portal?;
• Netflix: aqui nos USA um serviço muito bom é o Netflix, onde você recebe DVDs pelo correio. Agora invés de esperar pelo correio, poderei assistir filmes direto no Xbox;
• Banjo Kazooie e Viva Pinata 2: meu grupo está ajudando estes jogos com algumas features;
• You are in the Movies (Você está no filmes!): Isto é um jogo/aplicativo novo onde voce  pode criar seu próprio filme classe B! Eu vejo crianças passando bom tempo com este jogo;
• GH World  Tour: o novo álbum do Metallica vai ser lançado no GH e nas lojas ao mesmo tempo!
• Lips : para fãs de karaoke! E meu time também esta ajudando este jogo;
• Rock Band 2: kudos para o time da Harmonix por suportar que músicas do RB1 toquem no RB2. Além disto estão trazendo músicas do ACDC para o RB2;
• Final Fantasy 13: quem precisa de um PlayStation agora? :-)

By now you probably heard about the new features the Xbox LIVE group is bringing to your 360. In case you don't, here are some of the highlights (from my perspective):

• Avatars: if you liked the Wii Miis, then wait for the Avatars. This is an old concept that the Wii used well, but we are going to take it to the next level;
• Party system: tired of having to invite your friends every time you switch games? What about sharing photos, watching a movie with friends, etc?
• XBLA: Portal Still Alive: who did not like Portal? Maybe the cake is not a lie? =
• Netflix: why wait for the mail? Watch the movie in your Xbox!
• Banjo Kazooie and Viva Pinata 2 : and my group is doing stuff for them;
• You are in the movies! Create your own B movie! I think creative kids will have fun with it;
• GH World Tour: the new Metallica album will release for the game and shops at the same time!
• Lips: for karaoke fans! And my team is doing stuff for them too;
• Rock Band2: you gotta love Harmonix for supporting backwards compat with the songs from Rock Band 1 and bringing ACDC songs to RB2;
• Final Fantasy 13: who needs a PS now? :-)

Semana que vem tem E3, e na semana seguinte tem Gamefest (http://xnagamefest.com/). A Microsoft vai fazer vários lançamentos durante a E3 e Gamefest, incluindo algumas novidades desenvolvidas aqui no meu grupo. No momento ainda não posso falar muito sobre elas, mas semana que vem eu entro em detalhes.

Mas depois destes eventos, vou tirar férias no Brasil, mais precisamente no Rio de Janeiro. Quem sabe não entro em contato com alguém da Microsoft Brasil pra trocar algumas idéias, ou alguém da UFRJ/PUC-RJ, pra conversar com alunos e professores sobre o que fazemos aqui, oportunidades de emprego, etc. Vamos ver - mas no fundo mesmo quero é curtir as férias!

E3 will happen next week, and then in the week after there will be Gamefest (http://xnagamefest.com/). Microsoft will be making some big announcements during E3 and Gamefest, including some breaking news that are being developed/created in the group I work at. Right now I cannot talk in details about these things, but shortly I should be able to provide details, pictures, etc.

But after these events I will be taking some well deserved time off, vacationing in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, to be precise. I will try to establish contact with some MS Brazil employees and exchange ideas and information. I will also try to contact the UFRJ and PUC/RJ universities in Rio, hopefully have a chat with teachers and students about what we do here at Microsoft, career opportunities, etc. But the ultimate goal is to enjoy a great vacation!

Hoje é um triste dia aqui na Microsoft, pelo menos para mim - Bill Gates está desviando seu foco para concentrar-se na fundação de caridade que ele genrencia junto com sua esposa. Eu considero sua saída triste porque a companhia está perdendo uma pessoa super inteligente, e tenho certeza que a companhia precisa realmente de mais pessoas como ele (porque? isto é papo para outro blog). Eu tive o prazer de participar em 2 reuniões onde o Bill estava presente (revisões de produto, anos atrás), e ele mostrou sua grandiosidade em ambas reuniões. Eu pude comporvar que ele era brilhante, tinah uma grande visão para a empresa e produtos, delegava responsabilidade para os empregados e gerentes, e não tolerava enrolação, mentiras, lero-lero e coisas do tipo, como se tivesse um detector na cabeça! :-)

Com o Bill saindo da MS, a pessoa que eu mais respeito na empresa atualmente passa a ser o Steven Sinofsky, um VP sênior que lidera o time trabalhando no  Windows Live, previamente trabalhado nos grupos do Office e Windows Client. Eu estive em reuniões com o Steven na época que trabalhava no grupo do Office, e fiquei com a mesma imagem e percepção que tive sobre o Bill, conseqüentemente eu tenho muito respeito por ambos.

Eu desejo muita sorte para o Bill, e para a Microsoft também, nesta nova era sem o BillG - eu torço para que alguém na MS tenha a capacidade e competência (difícil) para continuar e terminar o que ele começou 33 anos atrás. Vou sentir saudades dele.

Today is a sad day at Microsoft, at least for me - Bill Gates is switching his focus to concentrate on the charity foundation he runs with his wife. I think it is very sad because the company is losing a very smart person, and I think the company really needs more people like him (why? that's another full blown blog article). I had the pleasure of being in 2 meetings with him (product reviews, years ago), and he was really brilliant at both of them. I could see that he was smart, had a great vision, pushed accountability and responsibility down the line, and did not tolerate ramblings or lies (he had a detector, really).

With Bill leaving, the person I respect the most in this company now is probably Steven Sinofsky, a senior VP leading some of the Windows Live team, having previously worked in the Office and Windows Client teams. I have been in couple meetings with Steven, and he passed to me the same image I got from Bill, therefore the respect I have for both.

I wish the best to Bill, and to Microsoft in the new era without BillG - I hope someone takes his spot and continue to drive what he started 33 years ago. I will miss him.

Eu não sabia que a Dr. Dobbs a Microsoft estavam patrocinando esta competição, caso contrário eu talvez tivesse participado. Parece que a competição começou no início do ano (2008), onde os participantes poderiam baixar alguns jogos que serviam como examplo e código base, e então modificá-los usando o Visual Studio e então submeter suas criações de acordo com diversas categorias, tais como o melhor jogo para Windows, o melhor jogo móvel, o melhor jogo usando somente 1 tecla, etc. Os prêmios incluíram valores em dinheiro, o que é sempre bem-vindo, certo? :-)

O site com a descrição do desafio, os vencedores e links para baixar os jogos vencodores é este: http://dobbschallenge.com/. Eu olhei os vencedores rapidamente, e alguns deles parecem interessante e merecem ser olhados.

I was not aware of this competition, otherwise I could have participated. It seems Dr. Dobbs and Microsoft sponsored a competition earlier this year where participants could download some sample games, and then modify them using Visual Studio and submit them in multiple different categories, like Best Windows game, best Mobile game, best 1-button game, etc. The prizes included awards in cash, which is always welcome, right? :-)

Um amigo meu me mandou a notícia abaixo da UOL Brasil anunciando que a Ubisoft está abrindo um escritório em São Paulo/Brasil. Esta é uma grande notícia, por muitas razões diferentes:

• Eu estou feliz em ver que estão prestando atenção no Brasil (finalmente). Mesmo que estejam planejando usar o escritório somente para desenvolver jogos para países diferentes do Brasil - infelizmente não estão planejando desenvolver jogos específicos para o Brasil, na maior parte por causa da alta pirataria e dos altos impostos.
• É uma grande oportunidade para os grandes e experientes profissionais e desenvolvedores de jogos que moram no Brasil e não conseguem arranjar um bom emprego, ainda mais se falando de um emprego uma das melhores empresas de desenvolvimento de jogos no mundo!
• Isto também uma possível oportunidade para mim, afinal de contas desenvolvimento de jogos e tecnologia são minhas paixões, e pretendo retornar ao Brasil no futuro. :-)

A friend of mine here at work sent me a link with an article saying that Ubisoft is going to open an office at São Paulo/Brazil. This is great news, for many different reasons:

• I am happy to see that they are paying attention to Brazil (long due). Even though they are planning to use the office to develop games for countries outside of Brazil - they are not planning to develop specific games for Brazil, mostly because of piracy and taxation :-(;
• It is a great opportunity for many skilled professional and game developers in Brazil to get a great job in one of the best game developers in the world;
• This creates a possible opportunity for me too. I love games and technology, and always plan to go back to Brazil. :-)

Eu estava vendo o site do Rcok Band e fiquei sabendo que na semana de 24 de Junho irão liberar o álbum Doolittle da banda Pixies, um dos meus álbuns favoritos de todos os tempos. Eu já havia ouvido falar sobre este boato no passado, mas agora é realidade. Aqui estão os detalhes que eu encontrei:

• O pacote  conterá todas as canções do álbum exceto "Wave of Mutilation", que já faz parte da lista de músicas do Rock Band original. Assim sendo o pacote completo conterá 14 canções;
• Cada canção custará  160 pontos, ou caso prefira o álbum completo custará 1520 pontos (eu vou comprar o álbum completo, claro!);

I was checking the Rock Band site and realized that in the week of June 24th they are going to release the full album Doolittle from the band Pixies, one of my favorite albums. I heard about this rumor in the past, but it is now a reality. Here are some of the details I found:

• The download will contain all songs except Wave of Mutilation, which is already part of  Rock Band. So the full package will contain 14 songs;
• Each song will cost  160 points, or get the full album for 1520 points (I will);

I was reading the Game Informer magazine, and while browsing the previews section I read about this upcoming game in the Tom  Clancy series, called HAWX. The game seems to be a mix between flight simulator and war games. This seems to be a great combo, reminding me of great past games like Tie Fighter, Wing Commander, etc. I hope it is closer to the these games than the Flight Simulator franchise - I want fast action, not slow simulation.

But what really drew my attention were the pictures in the magazine. The fighter models seem very accurate and realistic, but the background scenery was Rio de Janeiro, my hometown, including the neighborhood I was born (near the Maracana soccer stadium).

I still don't know much about the storyline in the game, but I am wondering what makes the game designers think that we would see jet fighters flying and firing missiles in the skies of Rio de Janeiro, considering that I don't think the Brazilian Air Force has anything closer to a F15 or F22 shown in the pictures below.

In case you are not familiar with the city of Rio de Janeiro, here are some landmarks you can see in the pictures:

• Maracana soccer stadium;
• Santos  Dumont airport;
• Rio-Niteroi bridge;
• Corcovado;
• Gavea horse race track.

I hope the city of Rio remains in the game by the time it ships, currently planned for Fall of 2008.

Eu estava lendo a revista Game Informer, e enquanto lia a seção sobre jogos em desenvolvimento, eu encontrei um artigo sobre o próximo jogo da série Tom Clancy, chamado HAWX. O jogo parece ser uma mistura entre um simulador de vôo e jogos de guerra. Isto parece ser uma grande combinação, lembrando me de grandes jogos do passado como Tie Fighter e Wing Commander. Eu espero que HAWX esteja mais parecido com estes jogos do que a família Flight Simulator - eu prefiro jogos de ação rápida e não simulação lenta.

Mas o que mais me chamou atenção era o local onde o jogo se passa, baseado nas fotos que encontrei na web. Os modelos dos aviões parecem muito exatos e realísticos, mas o cenário de fundo era o Rio de Janeiro, minha cidade natal, incluindo a vizinhança onde eu nasci e cresci (perto do estádio de futebol do Maracanã).

Eu ainda não sei muito sobre a estória do jogo, mas eu estou querendo saber o que faz os desenhadores do jogo pensar que seria possível de ver jatos supersônicos voando e lançando mísseis nos céus do Rio de Janeiro, considerando que eu acho que a força aérea brasileira nao tenha qualquer coisa parecida com um F15 ou um F22, mostrados nas fotos abaixo.

Caso que você não seja familiar com a cidade de Rio de Janeiro, estão aqui alguns pontos da cidade que você pode ver nas fotos:

• Estádio de futebol de Maracana;
• Aeroporto Santos Dumont;
• Ponte Rio-Niteroi;
• Corcovado;
• Pista de corrida de cavalos da Gavea.

Eu espero que a cidade do Rio de Janeiro permaneça no jogo final, já que isto pode ser somente uma versão demo. O lançamento do jogo está previsto para o final de 2008.

1942 is another classic game that is coming to the XBOX 360, not sure when yet, but you should see it soon available in the XBOX LIVE Arcade Marketplace. The game follows the basic idea of the original one, the the graphics and concept were improved significantly, as you can see in the pictures below. If you have access to the XBOX LIVE Partnernet and a development kit, the game is available for you to take a look at it. I played the first few stages and can say the game is fun, challenging as the original. I could see some moments where the performance degraded a bit, so I am hoping that before it gets released the developers will fix this and few others issues.

1942 é mais jogo clássico que está vindo para o XBOX 360, não sei direito a data ainda, mas acredito que logo logo estará disponível no XBOX LIVE Arcade Martketplace. O jogo segue a idéia básica do jogo original, os gráficos e o conceito foram melhorados significativamente, como você pode ver nas imagens abaixo. Se você tem acesso à XBOX Partnernet e um kit de desenvolvimento do 360, o jogo está disponível para que você dê uma olhadinha nele. Eu joguei as primeiras fases e posso dizer que o jogo é divertido e desafiante como o original. Contudo eu pude ver certos momentos no jogo onde a performance do jogo degradou um bocado - desde modo eu estou esperando que antes que seja lançado os programadores reparem este problema e alguns outros que pude ver na versão disponível na Partnernet.
